Capt. Mark Riley, a 23-year veteran of the Lexington Police Department, wasn’t surprised when he first heard that a local 19-year-old woman had been charged with operating a mobile methamphetamine lab across the street from the city’s Central Elementary School.

States differ greatly in how their police forces deal with speeders. In Tennessee, one of the more lenient states, the maximum speeding fine for a first offense is $50. But drivers pulled over in Virginia face up to $2,500 in fines and up to a year in jail.

Lexington Police Chief Sam Roman admits that he went through a phase as a kid when he wanted to be a pest exterminator. It didn’t last long. Roman became the chief of police in Lexington on Oct. 2 after spending 25 years at the Roanoke Police Department, where he had reached the rank of deputy chief.
